I'm back with a new blog post in my "Visit Haute Vienne" series. If you haven't checked out my last posts on the city of Limoges and Mont Gargan, you should definitely check them out. Today I wanted to write about a tiny hamlet called Eymoutiers that I visited in the spring of 2023. Bordering Haute Vienne and Correze, if you're looking to visit a quaint French village then you need to add Eymoutiers to your list.
Just south west of the city of Limoges and a 40 minute drive from the city I would recommend spending an afternoon in Eymoutiers. With just over 2,000 permanent inhabitants, Eymoutiers is a rural hideaway which is the perfect spot for hikers and families with small children who want to take a trip to the countryside. The name Eymoutiers originated from the name "Ayen Moustiers" which is the name of the monastery at the foot of the hill.
In all honesty there isn't a lot to do in Eymoutiers but it's extremely picturesque. I visited on a crisp Sunday afternoon in May following the ostension celebrations. This Catholic ceremony is celebrated every seven years in the Limousin region and is dedicated to the exhibition and worship of catholic relics in the region.
I loved visiting the cathedral of Eymoutiers, inside they had a ton of information about the history of the village.
Another interesting landmark in Eymoutiers is the riverside, it's a perfect place to have a picnic or to sit and read in the sun.
If you're planning to visit Limoges in Autumn, there is a seasonal festival called "Les Zébrures d'automne" which highlights art and culture from the Francophone world (French speaking countries) including dance, theatre, poetry and circus shows. On October 4th 2024, Eymoutiers will be hosting a performance of 'Fire and Smoke" as part of the festival, highlighting folk musique from the Manitoba region of Canada.
You can reach Eymoutiers by car in 40 minutes from the city of Limoges. Equally, you can take the train to Eymoutiers, however this take just over 1 hour.
